What is COSHH?
COSHH stands for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002. In plain terms, it's the set of rules that expects employers to prevent or reduce people's exposure to substances that could harm their health at work. That covers products you buy in — cleaning chemicals, paints, adhesives, salon products, degreasers — as well as harmful substances created by the work itself, such as wood dust, silica dust or welding fumes. A COSHH assessment is simply a structured way of writing down what you use, how it could harm someone, who might be affected, and what you do to keep them safe. It isn't a test you pass or fail, and it isn't a certificate; it's a workplace record you create, keep and review. For everyday products used in normal ways, a competent person can usually complete it without specialist help, which is exactly what this tool is designed to support.
SDS, exposure and controls — in plain English
A few terms come up a lot. An SDS (Safety Data Sheet) is the information sheet a supplier provides for a hazardous product — it lists the hazards, safe handling and first aid. It's useful where you have it, but you can also complete an assessment from the product label or supplier information. Exposure just means how a substance could get into or onto the body — usually by breathing it in, skin contact, splashes to the eyes, or accidentally swallowing it. Controls are the things you do to reduce exposure: using less-hazardous products, ventilation or extraction, safe systems of work, training, and PPE such as gloves, goggles or a mask. Residual risk is the risk that's left once those controls are in place. The aim of a good assessment isn't to eliminate every trace of a substance — it's to show the risk has been thought through and brought down to a level that's properly managed.

A COSHH assessment isn't a one-off. It should reflect how things actually are, so it's worth reviewing regularly and whenever something changes — a new product, a different task, a change in how often something is used, new staff, or a change to your workspace or ventilation.
